TECHNO GOES UNESCO
TECHNO goes UNESCO
It’s been a long and bumpy road, yet the journey has only begun.
Mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto had the idea for this initiative about ten years ago. During the event of establishment of the Association in the Tacheles Art House in Berlin, he spoke his idea out into the room. It was immediately picked up and incorporated into the statute.
Although the Association was closed down after a few years, the work on the “Techno as Cultural Heritage” continued. Finally, Dr. Motte and the Rave The Planet team took up the cause. A group of experts and consultants were put together and they worked hard for about two years on the research and scientific investigation of Techno Culture.
Many cultural workers and people connected with the scene were interviewed. Some interviews were video recorded and turned into a short film documentary attached to the UNESCO application (it can be seen on YouTube since November 13, 2021.)
THE APPLICATION WAS SUBMITTED TO THE UNESCO IN NOVEMBER 2021
Post sent! And parallel to the submission of the application, DJ Mag has published a great feature titled “Can UNESCO help safeguard Techno Culture?”. You can read quotes from our crew members Dr. Motte and Tomasz Guiddo answering the fundamental questions, as well as Tim Curtis, UNESCO’s Secretary for Intangible Cultural Heritage expressing his point of view. The feature attracted the attention of The Guardian. The following Sunday, it published another article “Beat that: Berlin’s Techno DJs seek UNESCO World Heritage Status.” This incited more curiosity about the project and resulted in a hail of international press reports, radio and TV features:

RAVE THE PLANET ON ARTE TV
Finally, our friends from Radio FG discovered more great news: The German-French TV channel – ARTE – reported about our UNESCO application. In the TV Show called “28 Minutes”, Alix Van Pée explained the project, what Techno Culture in Berlin is all about and why we are advocating for it as Intangible Cultural Heritage as Rave The Planet.

WHAT’S NEXT?
An application is still an application. As such, it must now be reviewed and approved by the UNESCO. How long this may take is difficult to say. One can assume about a couple of years, since the submission of applications to UNESCO is only possible every two years.
